REDUCING CRIME THROUGH AWARENESS

Operation Fahrenheit - Thames Valley Police

Operation Fahrenheit was developed by Thames Valley Police in response to burglaries committed in rural parts of West Berkshire. The impact on the rural community was immense and fear of crime in the area soared.

The employment of Trisigns as part of the initiative led to a reduction in vehicle crime over a 12 month period of 46% compared to a 5.8% reduction covering areas without Trisigns.

"Due to the ongoing problems regarding theft from parked vehicles we decided to erect a series of hardhitting Trisigns in and around our car park areas.

Within an 8 week period, instances of vehicle crime had reduced by 98% and continue to successfully remain at the same level".

Tony Walters - Crime Prevention Officer, Hampshire Police Fareham Division.

We have employed Trisigns in certain hotspot areas around the Borough of Runnymeade to make the public more aware of crime and create a more imaginative and hard hitting method to tackle vehicle related crime.

Gloucester Police and Gloucester Crime & Disorder Partnership have erected a series of Trisigns in and around city car parks and has since experienced a dramatic 86% drop in vehicle crime over a 12 month period.

Aim: To assess the impact of the Trisigns which have been erected at various locations in Exeter City Council.

Based on a three month comparison over the same period the previous year we experienced vehicle theft and motor offences reducing by 59%. We employed three hard hitting messages warning motorists to lock their vehicles and not to leave belongings in their car.

In summary, the Trisigns currently in place have had a very positive effect with theft of and from motor vehicles with the added detail of theft from vehicles by smashing windows ceasing completely.

With the Trisigns now proving themselves a successful initiative an extension of the same project would be recommended.
